A fox admires her reflection on a moonlit night. Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon: Musashi Plain Moon"

Kumiho - The Korean fox

Fox folklore has little to do with real foxes—real foxes live for twelve years instead of a thousand, for example, and very, very rarely do they grease their forepaws with sesame oil and draw horses' livers out through the anus. Real foxes are also unconcerned with any form of sexual alchemy, since they are generally too busy bearing or rearing pups to waste time flirting with scholars. And even if they did try to catch a human lover, their skunklike stink and their habit of eating earthworms and beetles would doubtless make the match short-lived.
